The June 2026 heatwave is historic. On June 22, France neared 43°C, levels never before recorded across all months combined. Météo-France compares this episode to the August 2003 heatwave — in terms of duration and severity. Météo-FranceMesinfos
And yet, thousands of walkers are out there. Streak obligations.
At WSWA, we don't preach standing still. We preach smart walking. Here is how to adapt your practice when the thermometer skyrockets.
🕔 Timing is everything
Forget noon. Forget 3 PM. During a heatwave, the walking window shrinks drastically:
- Before 8 AM: the only truly safe window for a long outing
- 7 PM - 9 PM: doable if the asphalt has had time to cool down (spoiler: in the city, that's rare)
- At night: a viable option for the most motivated — night temperatures remain high in urban areas, 22 to 25°C in the most exposed urban zones, but it is infinitely better than full sun Pleinchamp
💧 Hydration: Multiply by 2, minimum
In normal heat: 500ml/h of moderate effort. At 40°C: we double it. And do not rely on thirst — it is a signal that comes too late.
- Water + electrolytes (salt, magnesium) — sweat carries away minerals
- Avoid ice-cold water mid-effort: thermal shock guaranteed
- A 1.5L reservoir in your pack if you go out for more than 1 hour (the Hydrapak Seeker is perfect for this)
👕 Gear makes the difference
- Technical fabrics: UPF 50+, breathable long sleeves which are paradoxically more effective than bare arms (sun shield + sweat evaporation)
- Cap + buff: neck protection is mandatory
- Lightweight shoes: feet swell in the heat — plan for half a size up in summer
🌡️ Warning signs to never ignore
Walking in a heatwave isn't heroic if you ignore your body. Stop immediately if you experience:
- Intense headaches
- Nausea or dizziness
- Hot, dry skin (absence of sweat = imminent heatstroke)
- Mental confusion
In case of heatstroke: immediate medical emergency (15 or 18).
🔥 The WSWA streak during the heatwave
The WSWA rule remains a 3.2 km minimum per day. But the rule of survival comes first.
Our advice: bring the streak down to the minimum threshold, adapt your schedule, and protect yourself. A 3.2 km outing at 6:30 AM is better than a 10 km outing at 2 PM that leaves you bedridden for 3 days.
Consistency is about building for the long term. The heatwave is a peak. Get through it smartly.
Walk. But walk smart. 🌊
